Norwegian American Weekly (NAW) will now be published for another year, thanks to more than $30,000 donated by the Norwegian-American community to save the last remaining Norwegian-American newspaper.
The Norwegian American Weekly began publishing in 1889. Another Nowegian-American newspaper, Nordisk Tidende was started by Emil Nielsen in 1891. Carl Søyland was publisher of Nordisk Tidene from 1940 to 1963. Eventually Nordisk Tidene changed its name to Norway Times and was published in English from 1991. Both the Norway Times and Western Viking were taken over by Norwegian American Weekly.
The donations made to save NAW, show that it is important to the Norwegian American community to maintain ties with Norway and all things Nowegian.
